The Biggest Domestic Coffee Germplasm Resources Center Set up in Ruili
Update:2015-10-03

In Ruili which is a city located at the China-Myanmar border, five coffee varieties, with their copies reaching 352, are introduced, kept and cultivated, which makes Ruili the biggest coffee preservation and research base in China.

At the suburb of Ruili, there is a coffee planting base covering 50 mu of lands. Now the coffee trees are laden with green fruits, thanks to the shelter provided by the inter-planted rubber trees and the adequate irrigation system. Bai Yanbing, head of Dehong Tropical Agricultural Scientific Research Institute, said that all the coffee varieties can be preserved healthily and permanently in Ruili, because of the south subtropical monsoon weather, its mountainous environments as well as the perfect preservation facilities.

Bai Yanbing introduced that the main task of the coffee germplasm resources center is to introduce, collect, preserve, evaluate different varieties and provide seedlings, resources, information, and some other services for coffee breeding and research centers all over China.

In addition, Bai Yanbing told that after the establishment of the resources center, Dehong has been introducing more and more coffee varieties from Brazil, Columbia, etc. After careful selections, some high-quality, high-producing, and virus-resistant varieties have been picked out and now have been planted widely in Guangdong, Hainan and so on.

It is said that Dehong Tropical Agricultural Scientific Research Institute carried out an international cooperation project called “coffee rust resistance breeding research” with CIFC in 1996, and experts from Portugal visited Ruili many times to provide technical instructions and communications, which greatly helped China introduce coffee resources from foreign countries. Up to now, the institute has introduced 32 copies of coffee resources from Portugal, which will make domestic coffee resources more abundant.

Ruili Coffee Germplasm Resources Center was set up by Dehong Tropical Agricultural Scientific Research Institute in 1992 after the approval by Yunnan State Farms Bureau, and was named as ministerial level center by Ministry of Agriculture in 2009.
