In the afternoon of April 11, the opening ceremony of the Exhibition Hall of the Culture of the Five Native Ethnic Minority Groups in Dehong is held in Mangshi International Middle School. The hall aims to demonstrate and promote the splendid culture and unique customs of the five native ethnic minority groups in Dehong. Huang Liyun, member of Standing Committee of Dehong Prefectural Committee of CPC also director of Dehong United Front Work Department, presides over the opening ceremony Among the leaders who attend the event are Bandi (as transliterated in Chinese pinyin), president of ASEAN Cultural and Economic Committee of Thailand, Yu Mayue,director of Standing Committee of Dehong NPC, Pan Yueping, chairmanof CPPCC Dehong Committee and Kong Legan, member of Standing Committee of Dehong Prefectural Committee of CPC also vice governor of Dehong. Other visitors to the exhibition hall include guests from such neighboring countries as Myanmar and Thailand, leaders, experts and scholars from relevant departments and members of Collectors Association of Dehong. Yu Mayue,director of Standing Committee of Dehong NPC, delivers a speech He maintains that Dehong has given top priority to cultural development in recent years. Dehong spares no effort in pushing the reform of culture system and promoting its reputation and fame. “Holding the exhibition during the Water Splashing Festival is one of the important measures to showcase the folk art, boost the cultural tourism market and share the fruits of cultural development with others. We will seize the opportunity to protect folk customs, display intangible heritage, spread the splendid culture and serve the public. We will also make efforts in inheriting and tapping the original culture, providing spiritual impetus and cultural support for the building of “special zones along border areas, frontier of opening-up, and beautiful Dehong.” Among the items on display items are the folk handicrafts from Dai, Jingpo, A Chang, De’ang and Lisu, the five native ethnic minority groups in Dehong . These items feature distinctive culture of ethnic groups and symbolize the wisdom of each group’s ancestors. These items works as footprints of history, which offer us opportunities to see the track of historical development and to have a snapshot on the development of each ethnic group.
